In 1786 the "Elephant Inn" is referred to in a local history book. In the early 19th century it was established as a hotel and posting house and by 1822 is was one of thirteen taverns in public houses in the town, and was known as the Elephant & Castle.
January 31st 1948 saw great tragedy for the Riverside building when it was gutted after a fire which had broke out throughout the building. A refurbishment commenced which resulted with a bridge link being opened on January 16th 1949, which connected the main hotel to the riverside building. This bridge link is still in use today.
June 1957 saw the front balcony being added to the main hotel building.
During the late 60s Newtown was hit regularly by flooding of Broad Street from the River Severn. To prevent reoccurrences, a flood defence wall was built along the side of the Elephant & Castle Hotel which still protects the hotel and town to this day.
